Help restore Hoylake Victorian drinking fountain

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 28, 2008 5:19 PM

A VICTORIAN drinking fountain on Hoylake and Meols prom is being given a new lease of life.

The cast-iron structure is being restored to its former glory before being returned to Hoylake in time for the opening of the new Lifeboat Station nearby in early June.

The fountain was originally manufactured by Walter Macfarlane & Co, at the Saracen Foundry in Glasgow and was installed on the promenade in 1897, to celebrate Queen Victoria's jubilee.

Due to weather corrosion, some of the original features are now missing and Wirral Council would now like to hear from anyone who has old photos of the structure to assist in identifying and repairing some of the finer details.

If you can help contact John Harrison, Wirral Council Technical Services, Cheshire Lines Building, Canning Street, Birkenhead, CH41 1ND or email johnharrison@wirral.gov.uk or call 606 2358.

And if you have any stories to tell about the history of the drinking fountation please leave a comment below or send photos to lornahughes@wirralnews.co.uk

Memories Mystery 2 - Buses in the Birkenhead Tunnel

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 28, 2008 2:14 PM

BILL Nottage of Wallasey contacted Wirral Memories with a question for our readers:

"When I was at junior school (in the early/mid 1960s) I vividly remember cross section drawings showing that it was originally intended that underneath the four-lane roadway there would be a lower two-lane roadway for buses.

"Is there any reason why this was not proceeded with?

"What is the area under the four-lane roadway in the Birkenhead tunnel used for - and how big is it?

If you have any answers for Bill please leave a comment below.

Memories Mystery 1 - Scouts at Somerville

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 28, 2008 1:53 PM

WIRRAL Memories is hoping readers can help solve the mystery of this photo, which was sent in by Sandra Hunt.

Sandra found the photo in an old album belonging to her mother.

scouts-1.jpg

She said: "It shows a group of Scouts and Cubs along with four nurses and two men who could possibly be hospital porters or ambulance drivers.

"The inscription on the board in the centre of the picture reads:

Somerville Council School
Seacombe, Wallasey.
National Service Group.
____dy, A___ Ready. Nov 11th 1918.

"I think the words on the last line could be a motto but they are partially hidden by the boys heads.

"My father Percy Robert Mander is on the photo aged 8 years. He is on the extreme left as you look sitting on front of the nurse who is seated.

"I would dearly love to know what the occasion was; a parade for Armastice Day perhaps, and why are there nurses in the photo?

"Was the school used as a hospital in the war? Why are the Scouts wearing ties and not the traditional neckers? What was the National Service Group and are the words at the bottom indeed their motto?

Do you know anything about this photo - or can you tell us anything about the National Service Group or Somerville Council School? If so please leave your comments below.

Rock Ferry High's history lesson

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 27, 2008 5:46 PM

ROCK Ferry High School is marking its 80th anniversary this year - and the school is celebrating by looking back at its milestones and achivements.

A flourishing Old Rockferrian's Association has more than 100 members who meet annually and take an interest in the school as it is today.

This photo shows former pupils who took part in a production of She Stoops to Conquer in 1953:

Love at the Seaside

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 26, 2008 4:16 PM

VALENTINE’S Day might have come and gone - but here's a romantic image from 1954 to enjoy.

The location was New Brighton - and the couple were Alfred Mahon and Jean Boulton, who were celebrating their engagement.

Mr Mahon said: “She was sitting alone in the waiting area of the Embassy Cinema, Seacombe.

“I got talking to her, her name was Jean Boulton and she was 20. I was 21. Walking her home, I proposed to her and she accepted.

“We were engaged on Sunday, October 3 1954. To mark the day, we went to New Brighton to have a photo taken by the photographer on the promenade.

“We married the following month, on November 4.

“Today our Golden Wedding is but a memory but next year will see us celebrate our Emerald anniversary with our three sons, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren, who we love dearly.

Three men, a dog - and the Birkenhead News!

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 26, 2008 3:51 PM

TOM Radford from Tranmere sent in this photo, which was taken in Suez, Egypt, in 1952.

zzwbir130208suez-1.jpg

Tom said: "This was taken in Suez with the Cheshire Regiment in the time of the Suez Canal Emergency 1951-54.

"As you can see, the Birkenhead News was very welcome within the regiment.

"The photo shows (left to right) Jim Mansell from Ilchester Square, me - Tom Radford, George Poole from Brook St (now deceased) and Fly the dog.

“We were 18 years old at this time and we are now in our mid 70s. I’m hoping this photo will bring back some memories to the lads who served with the Cheshire Regiment at this time.
