Memories Mystery 2 - Buses in the Birkenhead Tunnel

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on February 28, 2008 2:14 PM |

BILL Nottage of Wallasey contacted Wirral Memories with a question for our readers:

"When I was at junior school (in the early/mid 1960s) I vividly remember cross section drawings showing that it was originally intended that underneath the four-lane roadway there would be a lower two-lane roadway for buses.

"Is there any reason why this was not proceeded with?

"What is the area under the four-lane roadway in the Birkenhead tunnel used for - and how big is it?

I think that the lower half was intended for trams, not buses.

I wonder if Merseytravel would ever let us have a look at this? Sounds fascinating

Hi Bill, the lower half of the tunnel was intended for an aborted tram system. I've been in it, and it's now used as the escape route introduced along with the emergency bunkers last year. It's a very impressive space. If you imagine the whole tunnel as a tube of smarties, the road is about 2/3rds down and underneath is the long space that would have held the trams. Now, an passenger walkway accessible by the emergency bunkers runs along the right hand side with a handrail. The bunkers alert you which is nearer for your escape, the Liverpool or Wirral side. Not sure why tram idea was abandoned - possible expense or decline in use?
