West Kirby Primary celebrates 100th birthday

Posted by Wirral Newsdesk on April 23, 2008 1:03 PM |

WEST Kirby Primary School is celebrating its centenary this year.

The school opened in September 1908 - but celebrations started on February 1 with a special school assembly attended by the Mayor of Wirral Phil Gilchrist, Stephen Hesford MP and Nigel Saunders, chair of governors.

In the last 100 years there have been only eight heads - with Mr Whetnell headteacher when the school opened.

The school's log book contains fascinating insights into life over the last 100 years, with descriptions of life during both wars, outbreaks of illness and important events in the school’s history.

West Kirby Primary has also hosted a celebration for all former pupils - who were invited to watch a video of an interview with the school's 96-year-old oldest surviving pupil.

Children are now working on a centenary wall hanging, which will show changes to the school and how school life has changed in the last 100 years.

Headteacher Neil Le Feuvre said: "The children have had a wonderful day and have started to appreciate and learn some new things about their wonderful school."

Katharine Ball wrote...

I was a pupil at West Kirby Primary School from 1964 until late 1970 when I moved to Canada with my family.

I have many fond memories of the school and my times there.

When will the school log or archives be going online?

Philip John Williams wrote...

I was a pupil from 1954 till 1961. As an infant I struggled under the tuition of Mrs Blatchley and Miss Irving to grasp the art of reading and writing. But when under the nurturing wing of Miss Crawshaw blossomed and by the time I progressed to Mr Williams's class was proficient at both reading and writing.
Looking back, Miss Crawshaw really did make a difference to my life for which I am fondly grateful for.

Gilbert Denis Stanley wrote...

I had the pleasure of attending the School in Orrysdale Road from 1939 to 1945, the war years. The Headmaster at that time was Mr Hutton.
There were Air Raid Shelters in the School Grounds and we had to use them on a regular basis when the sirens sounded. In one corner of the girls playground was the Cookhouse where Mrs Clayton, wife of the School caretaker produced excellent school meals which were served in the main hall of the school.I remember Joyce Clare, my first
sweetheart,Brian Hazlehurst,George Hatton,Leslie Oaks,Cyril Brumfit and John Griffin, a brilliant artist even in those days.
